Apprenticeship Success Story at D A Oldfield Ltd

After Archie Bond came to work at D A Oldfield (DAO) on a one week work experience to see if engineering would be a good fit once he left school in the summer of 2021, he hasn’t looked back. DAO were so impressed by his performance that they enrolled him into an apprenticeship with themselves and Derwent Training College in Malton, near York.

Derwent Training college provides its apprentices one day a week in a training centre with high quality modern equipment, then the rest of the week is spent honing their practical skills on the shop floor onsite.

Donald Oldfield, founder of D A Oldfield ltd, who also helped set up Derwent Training college alongside 8 other local employers in 1988 sees the massive value in handing over lifelong skills to the new generation. Donald who started life as a glass engineer apprentice at the age of 16, is looking forward to celebrating his 83rd birthday in the next few months, still working full time as MD and assisting with his lifetime experience in glass.

Archie, who is enjoying his apprenticeship and now in the 2nd year of the 4-year course was nominated and won the highly commended ‘Apprentice of the year’ award in his first year.
